Flat Feet Q&A

How do I know if I have flat feet?

Flat feet occur when the arches inside your feet are flat, allowing most, if not all, of the bottom of your feet to flatten against the ground when you stand.

Normally, the arches in your feet provide support when standing or walking. Lack of an arch can increase your chances of developing painful complications with your feet, ankles, and knees.

Both children and adults can develop flat feet. Children are born with flat feet that gradually develop arches over time (after age three).

Although most people with flat feet don’t experience problems, some people may experience symptoms like swelling, heel pain, arch pain, or pain that increases with activity.

What causes flat feet?

Loose ligaments in the foot that allow the arch to lay flat cause flat feet. Genetics play a major role in determining the way the feet develop. Most people with flat feet are born with the condition.

Fallen arches

Adult-onset flat feet are often referred to as fallen arches. There are a number of issues that can lead to fallen arches like fractures, dislocations, damaged tendons, and arthritis.

Fallen arches are typically caused by wear and tear that causes your arches to weaken and gradually lower over time. Certain factors, like age and obesity, can increase your risk of developing fallen arches.

Adult-onset flat feet can result in a number of complications like plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, and arthritis.

When should I see a podiatrist about flat feet?

Not everyone with flat feet develops complications. In many cases, people with flat feet live their lives without ever developing painful symptoms.

If you start to notice foot pain, swelling, or cramping along the bottom of your feet, book an appointment at Chicagoland Foot and Ankle. The team can determine the cause of your symptoms and the most effective treatment options.

What treatments are available for flat feet?

Before beginning treatment, your podiatrist performs a thorough examination, including a physical exam and imaging tests. If your flat feet aren’t causing you pain, you may not need treatment right away.

Depending on the severity of your symptoms, your podiatrist may recommend a number of treatments, including:

  • Physical therapy
  • Footwear changes
  • Stretching exercises
  • Orthotics

Your podiatrist may combine several treatments to effectively treat your condition. If your flat feet are severe or causing significant pain, they may suggest surgery to restore your arch.

At Chicagoland Foot and Ankle, the team works with you to develop an individualized treatment plan. To learn more about your treatment options for flat feet, book an appointment by phone or online today.
